The Arenal Volcano is the most recent volcano to form in Costa Rica. The area was settled in the 1930s without any knowledge that the mountain was once a potential eruptive zone some 400 years ago. This led to 42 years of activity, with frequent gas emissions, lava, and loud rumbling sounds. In July 1968, a major eruption occurred, causing numerous casualties, deaths, and significant financial damage. Minor eruptions continued until 2010. since the 1980s decade gradually got transformed the nearby village of La Fortuna into one of the world's most desirable tourist destinations.
Today, it has become an extraordinary experience to hike through the various trails that showcase unique lava fields, forests, and breathtaking views. These trails have been reorganized into different circuits that allow visitors to adjust the length and distance according to their needs.
